Alas, my mesmer begins in Cantha..
Alright, so after finally getting the game done on my Elementalist (Neriandal Freit), it's time for Alsitha to begin again.
I'm gathering his weapons, he has his armor, but I've still got a couple questions..
1. What did you feel like worked the best for your journies in Cantha?
2. What skills did you use the most of?
3. Did you feel you could find groups easier?
4. If not, did you feel that the henchmen where great to use?
5. Any other suggestions?
With the announcement of Guildwars: Nightfall earlier today, I'm wanting to go ahead and fly through the game with Alsitha as best I can and what have you, so suggestions on anything and answers to anything is much appreicated

1. Degen worked to a point, then it stopped making a difference, and now im on domination^^.
2. Backfire and Empathy should be married and have children.
3. I felt getting groups was a bout the same as Tyria, but there are more people in Cantha so that influences it somewhat.
4. I'll just say... yes ...and leave it at that.
5. If an assassin says he can get into groups much more easily than you can. Make a PvP character and take out all assassins in RA^^.

In my travels through Cantha the illusion line has worked very well in every situation for me. If you know how to utilize your skill set, you will be an asset to any party that takes you. Just remember, only the stupid parties refuse mesmers. The bad groups will weed themselves for you, and you will typically get into a group that will accomplish it's goal.

Congrats on your Elementalist finally beating the game. */Cheer* */congrats*
1. As a mesmer, you'll find early in the game Illusion is the way to go. Mid-to-near end, Domination rocks. Unwaking Waters and Shiro, you'll find both are good. Both health degen and interupts are needed.
2. Health degen in the beginning. Domination from Closer to the Stars on. We had health degens (poison, life siphon, etc.) against the Dragon and Shiro.
3. Its easier to get a mesmer into a group in Canthas than it is in Tyria. It could be more and more people are starting to see the value in Mesmers, or the fact that there are so many more spellcasters in Canthas that Mesmers are more accepted.
4. Henchmen are great in quests, not necessarily in missions. They are also not great conversationalists.
5. when announcing your presence to people in towns, state you are interupt. People love interupters. Never mention Inspiration. People who don't know what that is will ignore you.
As for Terra Xin's comment about Backfire and Empathy, they have a 2nd cousing called Spiteful Spirit.

Which for no logical reason is grouped under necromancer skills... despite all the skills with the same name are mesmer ones

Which makes it a 2nd cousin. If it were a Mesmer skill, then at least it can be a blood relative.
But since it belongs to the necro, its a distant relative.

Here's some actual useful advice and links.
When I first started Cantha I went Illusion, however once I started facing lvl 10+ monsters I began full domination. Go to this link for an easy build that can be made once you get to the Main Land Cantha.

I brought my Mesmer over from Tyria, and ran a bit of a mixed bag, mostly Domination, but a few Inspirations tossed in. I likethe enchanters armor for the energy boost.

2. What skills did you use the most of?
|
I used Empathy, backfire and a couple of interrupts + SV for a bit of e-degen.

3. Did you feel you could find groups easier?
|
Yes, I thought that it was much easier to get into groups, but I also think that it had started to get easier before Factions was released. As stated earlier, the groups that won't take a Me/* aren't going to be very good and suffer a higher failure rate than those that do.

4. If not, did you feel that the henchmen where great to use?
|
I used PUGs for the Missions (had to get the "protecter" title, don't cha know ) and Henchies for the quests. For the most part, the henchies were adequate, even if they did occasionally get stuck behind NPCs in the city areas.

5. Any other suggestions?

Aside from the others' suggestions, I'd say have fun & represent!

Spiteful Spirit is awesome. It activates when target foe casts a spell, attacks or uses a skill. It also inflicts damage to adjacent foes.
Right now, I'm caping all of the elites for my N/Me. I use my Curse+Domination build which works great with henchies. I died only twice and that was because I brought Empathy and Shatter Hex with me, instead of my normal Backfire and Shatter Enchantment. Too many spellcasters.

2 reasons for it.
1; Anet decided curse necro needed a buff, so they dropped the best Dom hex they could find in there.
2: The knew a mesmer with FC woudl just eat anything alive with 16 atty points and this skill.
But I digress. @OP: Like many here, I prefer dom hexing in PvE. I have no problems with illusion mesmers; I'm just not 1 of them.
My Canthan mesmer was my first character through this chapter, so the experience was...humbling when I henched some of the missions.
For suggestions...well, try Dom hexes. Thats what I ran through the game, and beat it in about 2 days (playtime) stopping for quests and a skillcap or three on the way up.

Very cool, very cool indeed.
I'm just in need of Garboks Cane now and I'm set I think, what sort of line up of skills does everyone seen them self using in Cantha?

My build is horrible to most of you probrally, but here it is:
Restoration Magic: 3
Domination Magic: 16 (12+4)
Fast Cast 10 (9+1)
Inspiration 10 (9+1)
Power Spike/Cry of Frustration
Complicate
Power Drain
Energy Burn/Shatter Enchant
Energy Surge {E}
Empathy/Backfire (most of the time Empathy)
Ether Feast
Flesh of My Flesh
Obviously Fleh of my Flesh can be replaced with any other res.
I just like being able to res in near 3 seconds

Sadly I do not possess a Mesmer primary.
But with my N/Me (I'll only mention builds I use when I use my mesmer):
Curse + Domination:
Spiteful Spirit (elite) - Prophecies only
Parasitic Bond - maybe Prophecies only, I'm not sure
Backfire/Empathy (depends on which is more dangerous)
Shatter Enchantment/Shatter Hex (depends on which is more dangerous)
Power Spike
Cry of Frustration
Signet of Capture/Signet of Disruption
Rez Signet
Illusion + Blood:
Life Siphon
Vampiric Gaze
Conjure Phantasm
Phantom Pain
Clumsiness
Inemptitude or Migraine (e) (depends which is more dangerous)
Blood Renewal
Rez Signet
When I mean which is more dangerous, I mean am I facing more Spellcasters or more physical attackers. Are there more hexes or more enchantments, which are more dangerous to me. I find Death Nova very dangerous.
Hope this helps.

Good Advice on Shiro and Kuunavang.
Kuunavang's Scales/Spores are clasified as "Spirits", so unatural Signet will recharge instantly when you hit them with it. It's a very easy way to be rid of double cast time & -10degen quickly.
Wastrel's Worry also only lasts 1 second on Shiro and Kuunavang. Against Shiro, I only used 3 skills, Energy Drain/Tap and WW. We killed him in 1/2 a min. Kuunavang, took about 2 mins.

Raged Out
|
1. Illusion with ineptitude clumsiness images of remorse and other degens
2. Ineptitude, clumsiness, image of remorse, phantom pain, conjure, energy tap, res sig, ether feas
3. Henched it all, mesmers dont need groups
4. Henchmen are better then humans imo
5. Mesmers are an easy class to learn, dont get frustrated when groups dont what you.

I keep seeing this "Spiteful Spirit" skill as being very useful - where would I be able to get that skill if I were a Me/N from Tyria?

Spiteful Spirit is located in the Southern Shiverpeaks. Just go from Droknar's Forge North, upto Camp Rankor. The boss appears sometimes north or south of Camp Rankor. He is one of those Shadow creatures that just pop up from the ground. He doesn't leave a corpse, but you can still cap.
Hope this helps.
